The Five Finger Rule 
Helping to Pick the Right Independent Reading Book
1.  Open the book to any page.
2.  Start reading!
3.  As you are reading, put up one finger for each word you do not know.
4.  If you have 5 fingers up before the end of the page, it is not for independent reading.
5.  Pick a new book and try The Five Finger Rule again.
 
Remember.........If your book didn't pass the Five Finger Rule, you can still read it with a grown-up!
