HAVERFORD HIGH SCHOOL THEATER ENSEMBLE PRESENTS...

“URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL!”

Cast MembersWhile the title of the show may raise some eyebrows, this satirical comedy also raises questions! Haverford High School will present Urinetown on March 26, 27, and 28. This hilarious show parodies many popular musicals and pokes fun at traditional musical theater conventions, but Urinetown is also rich with social commentary about the American economy, the division between rich and poor, and the way we abuse the environment. In a time where we seem to have to pay for everything, will we now have to pay to pee, too?!

With music/lyrics by Mark Hollman and book/lyrics by Greg Kotis, the original Broadway production opened in September 2001. It was nominated for an impressive 10 Tony Awards in 2002, winning Best Director, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical. It also won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical. The idea for Urinetown was born when Greg Kotis, a student traveling in Europe on a budget, encountered pay toilets at the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. The resulting book gave birth to a Gotham-like city where all of the toilets are controlled by a greedy corporation.

In Urinetown, a 20-year drought causes all restroom activities to be done in public toilets that are controlled by an evil corporation called Urine Good Company. Strictly enforced laws ensure that people must pay to pee, or else they will be sent to the mysterious Urinetown, where culprits are sent and never return. A new fee hike, instituted by the corrupt Urine Good Company, triggers a revolt by the poor. This leads to a head-to-head battle between these two opposing forces – will good triumph over evil?
