“URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL!”
While the title of the show may raise some eyebrows, this satirical comedy also raises questions!
With music/lyrics by Mark Hollman and book/lyrics by Greg Kotis, the original Broadway production opened in September 2001. It was nominated for an impressive 10 Tony Awards in 2002, winning Best Director, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical. In Urinetown, a 20-year drought causes all restroom activities to be done in public toilets that are controlled by an evil corporation called Urine Good Company. Strictly enforced laws ensure that people must pay to pee, or else they will be sent to the mysterious Urinetown, where culprits are sent and never return. A new fee hike, instituted by the corrupt Urine Good Company, triggers a revolt by the poor. This leads to a head-to-head battle between these two opposing forces – will good triumph over evil? The cast features 27 students, including Mark Watter ’10 as Bobby Strong, Devin Lloyd ’11 as Hope Cladwell, Brian Sanderson ’10 as Caldwell B. Cladwell, Laura Cohen ’10 as Penelope Pennywise, Mike Lastowski ’11 as Officer Lockstock, and Veronica Gottsch ’11 as Little Sally. Urinetown is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold!
